چکیده

Cochlear implants are used to restore hearing in the profoundly deaf [Th.J. Balkany, Otolaryngol. Clin. North. Am. 19 (2) (1986) 215-449] by direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. To study the working mechanism of cochlear implants and to provide a tool to develop better ones, a Boundary Element electrical volume conduction model of the cochlea (the auditory part of the inner ear) has been constructed. In this paper first a short comparison of the available numerical methods is given, then an algorithm is presented with which different cochlear geometries can be constructed and fitted with different types of cochlear implants. With the resulting model the potential distributions induced by the implant can be calculated, and a prediction of the effect of the implant can be made. The use of the meshing algorithm is not restricted to cochlear implants, but is is also applicable in other fields.

Effect of replacing cochlea contour with inner ear contour on cochlea dose-volume calculations in conventional 2 dimensional and conformal 3 dimensional radiotherapy of brain

Introduction: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is one of the possible complications of radiotherapy treatment of brain tumors. The auditory system of patients with brain tumors often is placed inside of radiation field and receives a significant amount of radiation dose resulting in hearing loss. The purpose of this study was to compare contouring and delivery dose to cochlea...

Physical Optics Calculation of Electromagnetic Scattering From Haack Series Nose Cone

In this paper, the physical optics method is used to study the problem of electromagnetic scattering from Haack series nose cone. First, a meshing scheme is introduced which approximates the curvature of the surface by piecewise linear functions in both axial and rotational directions. This results in planar quadrilateral patches and enables efficient determination of the illuminated region and...

Introduction to the Slide Modeling Method for the Efficient Solution of Heat Conduction Calculations

Determination of the maximum temperature and its location is the matter of the greatest importance in many technological and scientific engineering applications. In terms of numerical calculations of the heat conduction equation by using uniform mesh increments in space, large computational cost is sometimes countered. However, adaptive grid refinement method could be computationally efficient ...

Moving Mesh Non-standard Finite Difference Method for Non-linear Heat Transfer in a Thin Finite Rod

In this paper, a moving mesh technique and a non-standard finite difference method are combined, and a moving mesh non-standard finite difference (MMNSFD) method is developed to solve an initial boundary value problem involving a quartic nonlinearity that arises in heat transfer with thermal radiation. In this method, the moving spatial grid is obtained by a simple geometric adaptive algorithm ...

Application of Fuzzy Linear Programming in Optimal Load Shedding and Generation Reallocation Problem

In this article, an effective method to control a power system during emergency conditions is presented. Based on Fuzzy Linear Programming (FLP), a new technique is developed to solve the Load Shedding and Generation Reallocation (LSGR) optimization Problem. The objective function consists of terms of load curtailments and deviations in generation schedules. The constraints are power system var...
